Chapter 2,Sloka 7 Meaning,Translation and Interpretation

Chapter 2, Verse 7 – Samkhya Yoga

“Maatraasparshaastu kaunteya sheetoshnasukhaduhkhadaah;

Aagamaapaayino’nityaas taamstitikshaswa bhaarata”.

Translation

“The contacts of the senses with the objects, O son of Kunti, which cause heat and cold and pleasure and pain, have a beginning and an end; they are impermanent; endure them bravely, O Arjuna!”

Interpretation

After talking about the connection between the body and the soul, Lord Krishna continues to explain to Arjuna the characteristics of the body. He says that the body is linked to 5 senses of touch, taste, smell, hear and sight and the body gets all its responses through one of these five senses. He says that these 5 senses causes heat and cold to the body, it also feels the pain and pleasure. Like it was said in the previous sloka, the body has a definite beginning at the time of birth and a definite ending at the time of death. These 5 senses to which body is connected and the whole body itself in a way are just temporary. One has to win over the urges of these senses bravely is what Lord Krishna advises to Arjuna.

Extending the interpretation to Mankind’s Life!

Life is a journey of finite to infinite. What is finite in your life? Success is finite, failure is finite. Day is finite, night is finite. Happiness is finite, sadness is finite. Relationships are finite, emotions are finite. Life is filled with finites. Our body is finite. So, how should you see your life? We see it as finite. We run behind success, love, affection, money, material wealth etc which are all finite. We acquire all of them and we feel as if we have acquired infinite. We forget that nothing connected to body is infinite. The costliest house in the World, Antilla, owned by Mukesh Ambani is also finite. When he is no more, he wont take his antilla with him. We need to look at infinite for permanent happiness. What is that infinite? How do we acquire that? I will tell you tomorrow. Till then……

“SARVE JANA SUKHINO BHAVANTU
SARVE SANTU NIRAAMAYA
SARVE BHADRANI PASHYANTU
MA KASCHITH DUKHA MAPNIYA”
“MAY ALL BECOME HAPPY,
MAY ALL BE FREE FROM ILLNESS,
MAY ALL SEE WHAT IS AUSPICIOUS,
MAY NO ONE SUFFER”
